Key initiatives

The NZ Transport Agency is progressing several key initiatives related to public transport. A brief overview of these key initiatives and links to further information is provided below. 

Increasing private share of public transport revenue

To implement GPS 2024, NZTA is working with the public transport sector to increase the private share of public transport funding.

Bus driver fund

Through Budget 2024 the Government allocated $15 million of Crown funding over 2 years to deliver improvements to bus driver safety and working environments.

The bus driver fund will be administered by NZTA through one-off funding contributions on a co-funding basis towards the cost of agreed initiatives.

Please note your submission may become publicly available. The New Zealand Transport Agency may publish any information you submit and may identify you as the submitter if your submission is published or given to a third party.  

Please clearly indicate if your comments are commercially sensitive or, if for some other reason, they should not be disclosed, or the reason why you should not be identified as the submitter. Any request for non-disclosure will be considered under the Official Information Act 1982.

Bus indexation review

The New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi is seeking feedback on proposed changes to improve how indexation is applied to bus contracts between operators and public transport authorities. Feedback closed at 5 pm on 30 August 2024.

Development guidelines for regional public transport plans

NZTA prepared updated draft guidelines for developing regional public transport plans for sector feedback. Feedback closed at 5pm on 28 June 2024.

Proposed fares and pricing requirements  

Proposed NZTA requirements and guidance for public transport authorities for setting fares and pricing policies, defining fare concessions and farebox recovery targets. Feedback closed at 5pm on 12 April 2024.

Partnering and delivering models
