Being part of creating community spaces which contribute to a welcoming and environmentally friendly neighbourhood for future generations is important to Waka Kotahi.

Improvements to public spaces

Working with mana whenua, Auckland Council Parks, Auckland Transport and other stakeholders, we’re reinstating or improving many open spaces, parks and ponds along the project, including:

  • building 7km of shared paths and connections, to provide greater travel choice for how people get around their local community.
  • ensuring water catchments and stormwater systems such as new wetland ponds recreate natural landscape features which is important in creating a healthier city.
  • establishing thousands of additional plants and trees which will be incorporated into the area and improve the areas biodiversity, making the natural environment great for people to use and enjoy.

Tirohanga Whānui

Construction dates: October 2017 - February 2019

In early 2019, Tirohanga Whānui bridge opened to the community, providing a safe walking and cycling connection across State Highway 1 to connect people who live, work and travel between Albany and the East Coast Bays. Providing choice for how people travel around their local area is important to creating an attractive and liveable city.

The dual purpose bridge carries a watermain, suspended under the deck, over SH1 in a clever and cost efficient way, allowing Watercare to address the demands of the area’s growing population.

Rook Reserve

Construction dates: May 2019 – December 2021

The new all-purpose playground in Rook Reserve includes a multi-use court, hopscotch and four square games which will keep little and big kids entertained for hours. Seating around the playground not only provides a place to rest and watch friends and family play but doubles up as a skating or skateboarding facility and the new local pathways connect communities with places of work across State Highway 18.

As part of a creating a healthier city, the reserve includes a stormwater pond which is used to treat run off from the motorway. Making the natural environment great for people to use and look at is important and there’ll be hundreds of additional plants which will be incorporated into the reserve.

Sports club relocations

As part of the project, we have relocated and built three new community facilities on the North Shore.

After extensive investigation and consultation with all affected sports clubs, Auckland Council and the local community, the proposal to relocate all three clubs was approved in December 2017.

Visit the gallery and video pages to see more on each facility.
