Driving through the SH1 to SH18 link and underpass
In mid-March 2023, the direct SH1 to SH18 link and underpass opened which completes the Western Ring Route and provides a seamless and robust alternative to SH1, improving the resilience of our city’s transport network. If you haven’t already driven it, here’s what this stretch of road looks like.
Final motorway gantry installed on site
17 new gantries have now been installed across the Northern Corridor Improvements project. Watch this timelapse captured of the largest and final one which spans 55 metres and crosses eight lanes of motorway. Requiring a full motorway closure with a 250T crane on site for installation, next year it’ll have directional signage added including information for drivers travelling southbound towards the city centre or westbound to State Highway 18 via the direct underpass connection which is due to open in mid-2023.
Last of the Super Tee beams installed – October 2021
This timelapse video captures the team installing the last of the 281 Super Tee beams on the project. Bridge beams create the span between the bridge abutments or piers and the ‘super’ part of their name comes from their strength as these beams are loaded with pre-stressed steel cables which along with reinforcement allow them to span further than normal beams. The ones on this project are on average 35 metres long and can weight up to 65 tonne.
Paul Matthews Road layout changes
This piece was filmed before the new eastbound off-ramp at Paul Matthews Road opened on Tuesday 27 April. Those driving east on SH18 will be travelling down a new road layout and the Waka Kotahi Owner Interface Manager, Simon Paton was on hand to explain the changes.
Working at night video
This piece was filmed as part of a six-part NZ On Air documentary series for Stuff about working at night and features people from our team.

The new complex boasts New Zealand's first international standard BMX track with an eight metre ramp and berm jump and an amateur track featuring a five metre ramp. An all-weather surface, flood lighting and a new PA system have also been installed to provide riders with more time to safely enjoy the facilities.
