Introduction

Work category 322 provides for the upgrade or replacement of existing bridges and other road structures, where this is the main purpose of the work.

Qualifying activities

Work category 322 is available to the following activity classes:

  • local road improvements
  • state highway improvements

Local road and state highway improvements

Examples of qualifying activities

Examples of qualifying activities include, but may not be limited to:

  • improvements beyond like for like replacement of a bridge or other road structure at the end of its serviceable life
  • replacing a structurally inadequate bridge (other than at the end of its serviceable life)
  • replacing a bridge for non-structural reasons, such as inadequate width or waterway (other than at the end of its serviceable life)
  • modifying an existing bridge to increase its structural capacity to a level higher than originally provided
  • widening an existing bridge
  • undertaking approach work estimated to cost less than $50,000
  • property purchase costs less than $500,000 for local road or state highway projects
  • replacing retaining structures, including sea walls, that support a road (other than at the end of its serviceable life)
  • replacing tunnels (other than at the end of its serviceable life)
  • replacing culverts that have a cross-sectional area of 3.4 square metres or greater (other than at the end of its serviceable life)
  • sealing bridge approaches on unsealed roads, where:
    • the approach sealing is limited to a maximum distance of 50 metres from each abutment
    • the seal continues over the entire structure to ensure consistency of skid resistance.

 Conditions of funding

The conditions of funding for replacement of bridges and structures include:

  • New or replacement bridges on a state highway proposed for funding from the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF) must conform to the requirements of the NZTA Bridge manual. We may approve a specific departure from these design standards, including as a response to the Uneconomic Transport Infrastructure Policy.

Submitting activities for NLTP consideration and funding approval

Approved organisations and NZTA (for its own activities) submit these activities using the improvement activity template in TIO.
