About the project

The nature of the proposed works includes:

  • the construction of a new four-lane state highway corridor with a cross-section of approximately 50m to accommodate a four-lane dual carriageway and an active mode corridor with side barriers.
  • an underpass at Taupaki Road and bridges over the KiwiRail North Auckland Line (NAL) with further grade separations (overpasses or underpasses) at Waitakere Road, Pomona Road, Tawa Road, Puke Road and Foster Road.
  • the western end of the alignment ties-in at a proposed three-legged roundabout (with three connecting roads) with SH16 Main Road, immediately west of Foster Road.
  • the re-alignment of the following local roads, Pomona Road, Motu Road and Puke Road and an interchange at Tawa Road.
  • stormwater treatment including wetlands and culverts.
  • batter slopes to enable the construction of the corridor, and associated cut and fill activities (earthworks).
  • vegetation removal within the proposed corridor.
  • other construction related activities required outside of the permanent corridor including re-grade of driveways, construction traffic manoeuvring and construction laydown areas.
  • ecological mitigation areas.
  • interchange at Brigham Creek with on and off ramps in a split fork layout (where ramps branch off in separate directions) and realignment of the existing local roads at Fred Taylor Drive and Brigham Creek Road within the interchange area.
  • separated walking and cycling paths on all local roads, and shared path.
  • Project status and anticipated construction timeframes

This project is currently in the appeal period. Submitters had 15 working days in which they could appeal to the Environment Court, against the whole or any part of the decision from NZTA. Appeals are under Section 174 of the Resource Management Act 1991.

During this process NZTA works together with appellants to come to a resolution.  If the parties can't resolve the appeal independently, the Environment Court can appoint a mediator to facilitate the conversation. If a resolution can't be reached through court assisted mediation, then an Environment Court hearing will take place and the Environment Court will issue a decision on the outcome.

There is currently no funding for detailed design or construction of this project. We anticipate the project will be delivered sometime within the next 30 years to align with Auckland Council’s land use planning.
