From 1 July we’ll start installing a new water main (pipe) along Halswell Road between Curletts Road and Templetons Road. It will be bigger than the existing pipe and will boost current capacity, reduce leakage, and bolster future resilience.
Like other services, we’ll install the new pipe under the footpath and grass berm instead of under the road. This will make it easier to repair and maintain in the future without having to dig up the new road, and minimise any disruption. This means we need to remove some of the trees along the north/city bound side of this section of road.
We’ll start to remove the trees from Monday 16 June. The work should take about a week to complete.
We haven’t made this decision lightly and have consulted a professional arborist so we can retain as many trees as possible. However, we have had to balance it with the need to provide a reliable long term means of supplying water to homes in the area.

From Friday 9 May 2025, we’re relocating the traffic lane and barriers along Halswell Road, between 143 Halswell Road and Tankerville Road. Traffic travelling along this section of Halswell Road will switch from driving on the west side of the road, to driving on the east side. The switch is so we can start work on the northbound lane of Halswell Road with the majority of work now completed on the southbound lane.
Right turns into and from properties along this stretch of Halswell Road will continue to be restricted. Drivers will be able to change direction at the next available side street.
The barriers will not be installed across side streets unless we need to put a road closure in place for any future work we need to do.
The barriers help to keep cyclists, other road users and road workers safe, and encourage drivers to keep to the reduced speed limit. They also reduce the number of road cones on the road and the risk of road cones being blown into a live traffic lane and retrieved by road workers.
We're installing sewer pipes along Halswell Road, on the approach to the Curletts Road/Hoon Hay Road intersection. To do this work safely, from Monday 24 February, we have had to remove the right turn into Hoon Hay Road from Halswell Road.
The right turn into Tankerville Road is now available and right turns can be made at Lyttelton Street off Lincoln Road.

From Tuesday 14 January 2025, we’ll be starting to remove the existing road and build the new road in layers. We’ll be working on both the traffic and the bus lanes, a roughly 8m strip of road, which we’ll complete one lane at a time.
We’ll work in small sections along Halswell Road to minimise the length of time we impact each property.
We’ll be starting on the southbound side of the road on either side of Rowley Ave, as well as the Rowley Ave intersection.
From Monday 18 November, with the installation of traffic management barriers, there will be left in and left out only turns at the Hendersons Road/Halswell Road intersection.
This aligns with the final design for this intersection. Right turning traffic will be signposted via Monsaraz Boulevard for about 2 weeks while people get used to this change.

From Monday 9 September, the existing one-way traffic system on Rowley Ave will be extended to Barrowclough Street, and will be in place for about 5 weeks. Due to another contractor working in the area over the last couple of weeks, we were only able to work in a smaller section of Rowley Ave. The other works have been completed which allows us to extend our site.

Unfortunately, we need to continue working at the intersection of Aidanfield Drive and Halswell Road. The current road closure will be extended from Friday 30 August for about 8 weeks.
This is due to poor ground conditions, which have required us to dig deeper and use an extra 3000T of material to stabilise the road, plus the recent wet weather.
