The new Glenbrook Roundabout will make it safer for everybody using State Highway (SH22) and the local roads it connects to.
The roundabout is among a range of safety improvements Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency is rolling out on SH22 which included reducing the speed limits in June 2020 from 100kmh to 80kmh and from 70kmh to 60kmh. The new roundabout will replace the current “Give Way” intersection at SH22/ Glenbrook Road, which is used by around 10,000 vehicles a day and is expected to get busier as the local community grows. We know this stretch of road is a busy freight route with lots of trucks turning into local businesses. The new roundabout will make this route safer by reducing speed and eliminating a dangerous turn for large trucks at the existing SH22/ Glenbrook Road intersection.
Construction of the new $16.4 million roundabout began in March and is expected to be completed in early 2022. The roundabout will have four legs including access to the Paerata Rise development where 4,500 new homes are to be built, providing a safer and easier access point into and out of the new development. It will also be the main way to get to Paerata School, which will become part of the new development and is scheduled to open in Term 2 of 2021.
Investigations continue into making it even safer for people driving along this route with improvements such as safety barriers, turning bays and localised road widening being explored (subject to funding).
Between January 2015 and December 2019 there were 21 recorded crashes within 400 metres of the intersection of Karaka, Glenbrook and Paerata Roads. This project is aligned to New Zealand’s Road Safety Strategy, Road to Zero 2020 – 2030 and a programme of work delivering safety improvements, including speed management, on our highest risk intersections and roads across New Zealand. Through these safety improvements, Waka Kotahi aims to reduce the number of people killed or seriously injured on our roads, cycleways and footpaths by 40 per cent over the next 10 years.
