Each year, NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) undertakes a Māori partnerships survey, the survey is conducted by independent research agency, Maarama Consulting, and results provide the latest insights into the health of our relationships with our Māori partners.
Our relationship with Māori has seen positive movement on most of our relationship drivers in 2024, resulting in our overall relationship SPE measure increasing by 8 percent over the last year from 49 percent to 57 percent. Driving this improvement are significant increases in; reliability, fostering relationships, and cultural awareness and competency.
Since this survey began in 2022 the SPE has significantly improved from 45 percent to 57 percent. Notable additional significant improvements across the last two years are: equal partnership and delivering effective outcomes for Māori.
Our Māori partners, despite citing current improvements, are raising a clear message that they are uncertain about what our future relationship will look like. Continuing to focus on our key relationship drivers for our Māori partners will reinforce NZTA's commitment to Māori and meeting our legal obligations under relevant legislation and rules (including the Land Transport Management Act 2003, Land Transport Rules, Resource Management Act 1991 and Takutai Moana Act 2011).
