Each year NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) undertakes an annual survey of key partners and stakeholders. In October 2019 the Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency Board appointed Michael Heron QC to undertake an independent investigation into unauthorised public disclosures of confidential and commercially sensitive information relating to the delivery of light rail in Auckland. Following the 2019 MartinJenkins review into regulatory failure and its causes Waka Kotahi undertook urgent work to tackle a backlog of unsafe vehicle cases, addressed urgent gaps (e.g. employing more frontline staff to make sure certifying and licensing systems are safe and thorough), and to stabilise the regulatory function.
