Maximising effective width by reducing street clutter, minimising wait times at signal crossings, providing places to sit and shelter from wind, rain or sun, and ensuring surfaces are smooth (e.g. avoiding large areas of cobblestones) can all contribute to making the walking experience more comfortable.
