Timely and adequate maintenance of pedestrian facilities are key to keep the pedestrian network safe and accessible to all and ultimately support people to walk. It is important to manage maintenance activities (both pedestrian related and other infrastructure related) well, to improve the environment and maintain assets without undue disruption to pedestrians.

Purpose

Maintaining safe, attractive and accessible pedestrian environments enables the majority of journeys to be undertaken, not just those that are solely walking for the entire journey.

Principles

Maintenance and renewal works should follow the universal access principles so that access is retained to people of varied capabilities and states.

Planning

There are four main considerations for planning for maintenance of pedestrian infrastructure.
• Asset condition
• Timing
• One Network Framework
• Community demographics

Opportunities

When combined with other upgrades and depending on the nature and extent of works, maintenance can be used to progressively improve the pedestrian infrastructure.

Funding

Maintenance and renewals of pedestrian infrastructure can be funded through the National Land Transport Fund.
