The Land Transport (Road User) Rule 2004 includes a number of clauses regarding how pedestrians should cross roads. This includes:
- A pedestrian must use a pedestrian crossing, school crossing point, underpass or footbridge if it is within a 20m distance of where they want to cross (11.3).
- A pedestrian crossing a roadway without a pedestrian crossing or a school crossing point should, wherever possible, cross at right angles to the kerb or side of the roadway (11.4).
- A pedestrian must not loiter on a crossing or roadway longer than is necessary to cross the roadway (11.6).
