Pedestrians generally need to cross roads on every walking trip and may also need to cross railways, waterways and other natural features. Crashes involving pedestrians occur most commonly where they are crossing roads and difficulties crossing roads can be a barrier to undertaking a walking trip.
Providing safe and appropriate crossings are therefore key elements in providing a connected network for pedestrians. Crossings for pedestrians can be located mid-block (focus of this section) or at an intersection.
