Auckland Council is rolling out a number of upgrade projects through initiatives such as the City Centre Masterplan, to help create the world's most liveable city. Since 2011, new shared spaces have opened on Darby Street, Lorne Street (outside the Auckland Library), Fort Street, Jean Batten Place, Fort Lane and Totara Avenue West in New Lynn.

Auckland Transport and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency are creating a 7km long shared path, mostly 4m wide, from Glen Innes to Tāmaki Drive alongside the Eastern Railway Line in Auckland. The project will be delivered in four stages, and stage 1 was officially opened on 9 December 2016.

Māngere is a large suburb located near Auckland Airport. The area is multicultural with large Pasifika, Asian, Māori, and European communities living in the suburb.

The High Street District in Auckland is recognised and valued as an area with distinctive heritage character. Its shops, cafés, restaurants and bars, character offices and residential conversions make great use of historical building stock and streets, lanes and squares, creating enjoyable places to be.

A project initiated to improve safety for pedestrians and cyclists outside the University of Canterbury including the first uni-directional separated cycleways in Christchurch as well as dual crossings, a shared path and 40km/h speed zone.

Barrier gates were installed at a rail crossing on the Uni-Cycle Route on Matai Street West, stopping pedestrians and cyclists from crossing the tracks when trains are approaching.

The Avon River Precinct / Te Papa Ōtākaro was the first of seventeen anchor projects in the Christchurch Central Recovery Plan to be taken through design and construction.

Tasman District Council, Nelson City Council, Waka Kotahi and the local Countdown supermarket partnered to improve the safety and accessibility for users of the Champion/Salisbury Road roundabout in Tasman.
