Changes to ACC levy for electric vehicles from 1 July 2025

Electric vehicles paid a discounted ACC levy rate while the government sought to encourage the uptake of low-emission vehicles. They paid the same ACC levy rate as petrol vehicles, even though petrol vehicles also pay an ACC levy when they buy petrol at the pump.

As electric vehicles now make up over 2% of New Zealand's fleet, the discount ended on 1 July 2025. This means electric vehicles are now levied fairly against the rest of the vehicle fleet.

Licence fees changed from 1 January 2025

The Annual licence fee portion of the licence (rego) fee hasn’t increased since 1994, although the ACC and other fee portions of the overall cost have varied over the years.

In May 2024 the Government decided to increase rates to what they would be (more or less) if adjusted for inflation since 1994.

Most of the funding collected from fees goes into the National Land Transport Fund (NLTF). Other amounts go to ACC, an administration fee, and GST.

The Government intends for the same fee increases to happen again in January 2026.
