Previous research has indicated gaps in transport access for Māori (and Pacific people) which need to be further specified and closed to ensure equity of outcomes and proper recognition of the treaty partnership between Māori, Waka Kotahi and the wider transport sector.
This research found that historically, the impacts of the Transport System on Māori have been negative, and respondents identified that the practical issues of knowing who to engage with on transport matters can be off-putting and daunting.
Numerous opportunities for those working within the industry to achieve better outcomes for Māori were identified.
