Young drivers aged 16 to 24 years old are over-represented in serious and fatal crashes in New Zealand. Approaches to advanced or skills based driver training that enable early licensure have come under scrutiny and this research has reviewed international literature and drawn conclusions about which approaches are likely to contribute most and least to improvements in driver skill and behaviour, with consequent implications for safety outcomes.
The report also contains several technical recommendations relating to both the content of advanced or skills based driver training programmes and future evaluations.
The findings will inform the review of driver licensing and consideration of future priorities for research and evaluation of driver training initiatives.
