Coastal hazards guide for land transport infrastructure

Published: | Category: Environment , Planning, design, funding, building, maintenance of the transport network , Guidance for specialists | Audiences: Road traffic engineers & consultants, Roading contractors

This guide sets out how to consider and respond to the dynamic nature of the coastal environment across the lifecycle of NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) land transport infrastructure. This includes planning and design considerations, asset condition monitoring, maintenance and adaptation of structures to ensure they do not become increasingly vulnerable to degradation and failure. The guide provides coastal practitioners with planning checklists and details what NZTA expects in coastal hazards assessments.

This key aims of this guide are to:

  • provide nationally consistent systematic guidance for identifying, assessing, and managing coastal hazards affecting land transport infrastructure
  • support adaptation to and mitigation of the effects of climate change, and
  • promote and implement a best-practice approach for future resilience of land transport infrastructure.

The guide is intended for use by project teams, supporting consultants and contractors. It also provides clarity for stakeholders on what coastal issues should be considered in the design of coastal infrastructure.
