Plans for walking and cycling improvements throughout the Whakatipu Basin will make it safer and easier for locals and visitors to move around the region. The cycling and walking routes will improve connections to both existing and new trails and connect to key destinations throughout the Basin.
Whakatipu Active Travel Network is an integrated network of trails for cycling and walking that connect to public transport, providing a genuine alternative to getting around by car.
It is designed to connect key destinations such as Arrowtown, Arthurs Point, Kelvin Heights, Jacks Point, Lake Hayes Estate and Shotover Country, Fernhill, Frankton and Queenstown.
A programme of work to deliver new walking and cycling facilities, as outlined in the completed business case, has been approved by QLDC and joint funding for the first package of the new work has been approved by Waka Kotahi.

The funding will help give locals and visitors choice in how they move about the Whakatipu Basin and better connect local communities and encourage people to cycle or walk.

Whakatipu Active Travel Network is being delivered under the Way to Go partnership. Way to Go is a partnership between Queenstown Lakes District Council, Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency, and Otago Regional Council, who are committed to working together to develop and deliver a safe, connected and accessible transport network for Whakatipu, and provide people with transport choice.
The Way to Go partnership recognises that all three agencies have an important role to play in driving change.

There has already been a significant amount of planning done to identify potential solutions and the group will continue to build on this work.
