We’re resurfacing the Hutt highway

NZTA Wellington Transport Alliance will be resurfacing various sections of State Highway 2 Hutt Valley at night, between Petone and Totara Park. This will impact SH2 users and people who live in the Hutt Valley.

It’s expected works will be carried out on certain nights until early 2025, The indicative schedule will be updated on this page as and when possible. Works will be at night meaning local road detours – this is to avoid heavily disrupting traffic during the day.

Currently, there are various sections of the highway that are in poor condition so they must be resurfaced to make the highway better and safer for all road users. The road will have improved surface texture, skid-resistance and water-drainage properties.

Indicative works schedule

The indicative works schedule is below, in order of works, with approximate timing only. Works schedules may change due to poor weather or other impacts on our schedule. Dates can very easily change, so timing is intentionally generic.

We only do roadworks and close the road on Sunday – Thursday nights. Friday and Saturday nights will always be open as normal.

Check digital signage and sign up for weekly roadworks updates to keep up-to-date on works dates and locations.

Kennedy Good Bridge and Major Drive intersections

On Sunday 8 December, weather permitting, we will be resurfacing Kennedy Good Bridge intersection which will mean the Kennedy Good Bridge will be fully closed, including access to and from State Highway 2.

Vehicles will need to use Melling Link interchange to access SH2 or Lower Hutt.

On Monday 9 and Tuesday 10 December, weather permitting, we will be resurfacing around Kennedy Good Bridge and Major Drive intersections, as well as making traffic signal improvements.

Stop/go traffic controls will be in place which may cause delays in both north and southbound directions. Access to Major Drive, Kelson will be available at all times.

Totara Park to Whakatiki Street

On Monday 9 December, we will be carrying out maintenance works as well as site inspection works in preparation for future maintenance works on this section of the highway.

This will mean vehicles will need to detour between Whakatiki Street and Totara Park for one night to allow for resurfacing and barrier repairs.

We are expecting to resurface sections of State Highway 2 Hutt Valley between Grounsell Crescent and Tirohanga as well as near Petone, in the southbound lanes, early in 2025. This page will be kept updated with further information.

Works completed so far

Throughout September and October 2024, we have resurfaced approximately 8.8 lane kilometres of State Highway 2 in the Hutt Valley. As of November, there is approximately 5 lane kilometres remaining for this season.

Sections of the northbound lanes between Dowse Interchange and through to Belmont were resurfaced in September. Moving north, sections of northbound lanes near Manor Park and sections of southbound lanes on River Road were resurfaced. More recently in November, both north and southbound lanes near Totara Park were resurfaced.

Information for residents

Residents who live near SH2 and close to the works will hear machinery working near their properties for a few nights. We will notify residents with more detail in advance of the work.
