We have been reviewing speed limits on the existing SH1 and SH57 as part of our work to make travel in the Ōtaki to north of Levin corridor safer and more resilient.
In August and September 2021, we consulted with stakeholders and the public on the safe and appropriate speed for SH57 from south of Levin to Shannon. We also consulted on speeds for SH1 from Ōtaki to Levin in May and June 2022.
Our speeds really matter. They can make a substantial difference to creating safe and sustainable communities. By adopting safe speeds on our roads and streets, we can help everyone get around safely, no matter how they travel.
We’re identifying roads where safe speed limits can make a big difference in saving lives, and where communities are calling for change.
When speed limits were set years ago, we didn’t have the research or technology we have now to ensure everyone is kept safe. Our towns and cities have also developed, with new places for communities to eat, play, study and work. Most of our speed limits are no longer appropriate for how our roads and streets are being used now and into the future.
We have a responsibility for improving road safety, so we’re making changes to these routes to ensure our speed limits fit the design and use of the road.
The following speed limits were proposed during consultation and have been set as the new permanent speed limits. The new permanent speed limits implemented in December 2022 are:
State Highway 1
Location |
Existing speed limit (km/h) |
New speed limit (km/h) |
From 150m south of Muhunoa East Road to 150m north of Waikawa Beach Road |
100km/h |
80km/h |
From 180m south of the intersection with the railway underpass road linking to Honi Taipua Street to 380m west of Pukehou Overbridge |
100km/h |
80km/h |
State Highway 57
Location |
Existing speed limit (km/h) |
New speed limit (km/h) |
360m south of Graham Street, Shannon to 20m north of Vance Street |
70km/h |
60km/h |
310m east of SH1 intersection to 70m north of Heatherlea East Road |
100km/h |
80km/h |
When determining the proposed speed limits that we consulted on, we reviewed the speeds that people are currently travelling at on this road, the nature and design of the road itself, as well as the various infrastructure improvements planned, under construction and completed on these roads. We also considered the future use of these roads with the upcoming completion of the Kāpiti Expressway south of Ōtaki, and the planned development of the Ōtaki to north of Levin corridor. These speed limits were assessed to be the safe and appropriate speeds for these routes.
