Why is this project happening now?
Waka Kotahi has many transport improvements planned throughout the country which are prioritised by their potential for saving lives, improving safety and access and level of investment. Ashburton is one of three growing rural centres in Canterbury (as well as Tinwald and West Melton) to receive investment in intersection safety improvements as part of the Government’s New Zealand Upgrade Programme (NZUP), a range of transport projects to get our cities and regions moving, save lives and boost productivity.
Was the local community consulted?
Yes – the community was consulted in 2013 and the following changes were made:
Pedestrian access made straighter and more direct
Will there be traffic delays and road closures?
Yes, there will be some interruption to daily life while construction is underway. However, we will give you plenty of notice of traffic changes so you can plan your journey accordingly.
Who is funding the project and what are the costs?
Waka Kotahi is delivering this project as part of the New Zealand Upgrade Programme, the Government’s $8.7 billion investment in growing communities across the country. The funding allocation for this specific project is $15m (including contingencies). Currently, the project is estimated to cost less.

Are there going to be trees removed or a reduction in green space?
Some trees will need to be removed in order to widen the road and to construct swales and basins for managing stormwater. The areas between the road and railway will be grassed and landscaped.
Will access to Ashburton Domain be closed?
No, access to Ashburton Domain will continue to be maintained. At the end of the project, the State Highway entrance to the Domain will be left in and left out only.
