About the project

Otoko Hill is an area on Gisborne’s State Highway 2 north that was severely damaged in Cyclone Gabrielle.

There are multiple sites that require repair work including under and overslips as well as guard rail, pavement and retaining wall repairs.

Work will take place between 6am and 6pm Monday to Friday, and traffic lights or stop/go will be operating through the sites 24/7. Weekend work may also be undertaken.

Project status

  • Otoko Hill Instability – COMPLETE

We’ve constructed a buttress at this location to strengthen the hillside alongside the road and also made drainage improvements to reduce water levels in the hills and also channel water away from the road.

  • Otoko Hill Slips #2 – IN CONSTRUCTION

We’re repairing this underslip using soil anchors to stabilise the ground surrounding the road. We’re also constructing a retaining wall and installing rip rap at the foot of the slip to protect the road from future erosion.
