State Highway 2 north of Gisborne was significantly damaged during Cyclone Gabrielle. The Transport Rebuild East Coast (TREC) Alliance is carrying out recovery work to restore this road back to two lanes and keep communities connected.
Recovery projects to repair the damage caused by Cyclone Gabrielle and make this section of highway more resilient are underway. Most of the work is designed to strengthen and stabilise the areas around the state highway and help guide water away from the road. This will help prevent slips and road closures. There is also a lot of bridge improvement work to reduce the impact of river erosion on these structures. Work is expected to be complete by mid-2025 excluding Nesbitt’s Dip which will continue into 2026.
Some of the completed projects include:
Barrier realignment.
