Purpose

This project is a key part of the Western Ring Route which once complete, will provide an alternative to SH1, central Auckland and the Auckland Harbour Bridge.  It involves widening a section of the Northwestern Motorway and extending bus shoulder lanes and improving walking and cycling facilities.  Upgrades will be made to all five motorway onramps and exits along with widening and raising the Te Atatu Road overbridge.

Benefits

  • Increasing capacity by widening a section of the Nothwestern Motorway (SH16) between Te Atatu and Lincoln Roads from two to three lanes in each direction
  • Improving safety by rebuilding motorway onramps and exits
  • Widening the Te Atatu overbridge and providing an additional lane in each direction
  • Raising the Te Atatu overbridge and increasing clearance underneath the bridge
  • Extending bus shoulder lanes to SH16 for quicker bus trips during peak periods
  • Improved pedestrian and cyclist access throughout the interchange and on the Northwestern cycleway
  • Replacement of existing Jack Colvin Park spectator seating
  • Stormwater treatment installation
