The SH16 Lincoln to Westgate project improves the Northwestern Motorway between Lincoln Road and Westgate to support growth in the western suburbs and increased traffic using the Western Ring Route. This project commenced in June 2016 and was completed in December 2019.
The SH16 Lincoln to Westgate project has improved this section of Northwestern Motorway and ties into work recently completed at the Lincoln Road Interchange. The motorway has been widened between Lincoln Road and Westgate with additional traffic lanes, better on and off-ramps, and a bus shoulder lane in both directions.
Bridges over the motorway has been replaced at Royal Road, Huruhuru Road and at Huruhuru Creek (westbound only). The Northwestern Cycleway has also been extended alongside the motorway to create a shared walking and cycling path. This project is part of the Western Ring Route to provide an alternative to SH1, central Auckland and the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

The motorway has been widened from two to three lanes in each direction between Lincoln Road and Westgate. Bus shoulder lanes now run in both directions and the Northwestern Cycleway has been extended all the way to Westgate. Bridges over the motorway has also been replaced and widened at Huruhuru Road and Royal Road together with improvements to on and off ramps at Lincoln Road and Royal Road.

CloseWe had worked on the Lincoln Road Interchange project upgrading several bridges and ramps and widening the motorway from two to three lanes in each direction. This Lincoln to Westgate project tied into the Interchange project to improve the motorway further west, providing three lanes in each direction all the way to Westgate.
CloseThe Royal Road Bridge over SH16 has been replaced to provide three traffic lanes (two lanes heading eastbound and one lane westbound), an on-road cycle lane and a 3-metre wide footpath. Ramps have also been upgraded to improve safety and capacity.
