Project introduction

The Lincoln Road Interchange project on Auckland’s Northwestern motorway (SH16) is being upgraded to support the expected growth of the western suburbs and industrial hub of Henderson. It is a key component in completing the Western Ring Route.

Purpose

The Lincoln Road Interchange project involves widening a section of the Northwestern motorway and the Selwood Road overbridge.  Improvements will be made to the interchange onramps and exits along with extending the Northwestern cycleway and bus shoulder lanes.  This project is a key part of the Western Ring Route which once complete, will provide an alternative to SH1, central Auckland and the Auckland Harbour Bridge.

 

 

Benefits

  • Widening a section of the Northwestern motorway from two to three lanes in each direction to increase capacity
  • New six lane bridge at Selwood Road (future-proofed for seven) with a shared pedestrian / cycle path across the bridge
  • Wider and realigned onramps and exits to improve safety and traffic flow
  • Signalised intersections on the interchange for safer movement between the motorway and local roads
  • Extension and improvements to the Northwestern cycleway between the Henderson Creek Bridge and Lincoln Road
  • A new, widened motorway bridge over Henderson Creek
  • Extension of bus shoulders along SH16 for improved bus journey times during peak periods
  • Two new wetlands to catch and filter stormwater run-off from the motorway
