About the project

At the heart of the long-term future transport network for North Auckland, is a proposed rapid transit corridor (RTC) between Albany and Milldale including alterations to existing designations 6751, 6760, 6759, 6761. The intent is to provide fast, frequent, reliable and high-capacity public transport services for future communities in Milldale, Silverdale, Ōrewa, Wainui East and Dairy Flat.

The nature of the proposed works includes:

  • SH1 improvements, including:
    • widening to provide 3 lanes northbound and southbound, from just south of Lonely Track Road to Silverdale Interchange with the opportunity to use the additional lanes as bus priority lanes and/or managed lanes.
    • interchange improvements at Ō Mahurangi Penlink (Redvale) Interchange and Silverdale Interchange.
    • a new Interchange at Wilks Road.
    • a new cycleway and/or shared path between Albany and Ōrewa.
    • a new Silverdale to Highgate active mode connection.
    • a new Wainui Interchange active mode connection.
    • replacement bridges at Lonely Track Road and Bawden Road.
  • tie-ins with existing roads and localised widening around the existing intersections/interchanges to accommodate new intersection forms.
  • new or upgraded stormwater management systems, bridges and culverts (where applicable).
  • retaining walls and batter slopes, and associated cut and fill earthworks;
  • vegetation removal.
  • other construction related activities required outside the permanent footprint including the regrade of the site, construction traffic manoeuvring and construction laydown areas.
  • Project status and anticipated construction timeframes

    This project is currently in the appeal period. Submitters had 15 working days in which they could appeal to the Environment Court, against the whole or any part of the decision from NZTA. Appeals are under Section 174 of the Resource Management Act 1991.

    During this process NZTA works together with appellants to come to a resolution.  If the parties can't resolve the appeal independently, the Environment Court can appoint a mediator to facilitate the conversation. If a resolution can't be reached through court assisted mediation, then an Environment Court hearing will take place, and the Environment Court will issue a decision on the outcome.

    There is currently no funding for detailed design or construction of these projects. We anticipate the project will be delivered sometime within the next 30 years to align with Auckland Council’s land use planning.
