We’re building a safe and attractive cycle and walking route between Wellington and Lower Hutt, with resilient coastal defences to protect the rail line and State Highway 2.
Working closely with KiwiRail and using Wellington technology called the Digital Shield – an innovation first used right here in the capital, piloted by KiwiRail on the Trentham to Upper Hutt project. The shield works like an invisible fence between the trains, the tracks and our machinery, like diggers, excavators and trucks. The shield prevents our machinery from being too close to tracks, trains and overhead wires. This means trains can keep running while work is underway, and the line doesn’t need to be closed. These measures are in place to keep everyone safe – and to keep trains running for your journey. So if you’re heading into Pōneke from Wairarapa or the Hutt Valley, you’re likely to see us along the harbour-side on the Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-One Section of Te Ara Tupua.
