An enhanced reef habitat has been designed to restore the diverse marine life under the Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-One section of Te Ara Tupua.
54 engineered reef ‘pyramid’ units will be submerged off the west coast of Te-Whanganui-a-Tara and will be the first of its kind and of this scale for biodiversity compensation purposes in New Zealand. Working with iwi mana whenua, Taranaki Whānui ki te Upoko o te Ika and Ngāti Toa, the progress of reef will be monitored to ensure that it provides a thriving habitat with more fish and well-developed shellfish and plant populations.
