The protection of State Highway 2 and the rail corridor along the coastal edges of Te Whanganui-a-Tara is halfway to completion, with the New Zealand Transport Agency Waka Kotahi approving further funding of up to $36.8 million for Te Ara Tupua – the project that will improve transport resilience while creating a walking and cycling connection between Wellington and Hutt Valley.
The additional funding is required to finish building the Ngā Ūranga ki Pito-One section between Ngā Ūranga and Pito-one. Jetesh Bhula Regional Manager Infrastructure Deliver, says it was crucial to secure this funding due to the increased cost of delivering infrastructure projects such as Te Ara Tupua which will protect a strategic transport link for Wellington.
“This funding decision means we can complete the work we are halfway through. Cost escalation has been significant and above the average annual rate of inflation. Our teams have been working productively and efficiently since construction commenced. However, we had exhausted all avenues to acquire further savings”
Greater Wellington relies on two road and rail corridors which are vulnerable to earthquakes, flooding and slips therefore it is a priority for the region’s network to be made more resilient. Te Ara Tupua will provide safer transport options while supporting economic growth and productivity.
