Community engagement is an important and ongoing part of the Te Ahu a Turanga project.
Iwi are partners on the project Alliance and are involved at every level of the project, from governance to operations.
A lot of community consultation took place in the project’s earlier stages, with input sought from the townships and stakeholders most affected by the gorge closure. Information sessions, workshops, library displays, community meetings and school visits enabled people to have their say on where the new route should go and what it should look like. This feedback fed into decisions around route selection, design and consent processes.
