Stage 1

As we want to start construction as soon as possible, we’re focusing on Stage 1 as it already has a confirmed designation in place. By splitting up this stage into different construction packages, we can start on site in the places where we have more certainty while we continue to undertake more technical work on the design and construction methodology for the areas where there is a greater level of uncertainty.

Benefits of Stage 1 include:

  • Increasing the capacity of Mill Road ensures people travelling will experience faster and more efficient journeys as north/south trips will be prioritised to help maintain consistent traffic flow on the corridor.
  • Upgrading Mill Road to a 4-lane corridor increases the resilience of the Auckland transport network to support continued economic growth.
  • Improvements to safety for all users will focus on new and upgraded intersections, along rural sections and areas which are already highly urbanised.
  • A westbound bus lane between Everglade Drive and the SH1 interchange supports the public transport network especially during the morning peak travel time.

Key features of the Stage 1 design include:

  • 2 lanes in each direction, including a westbound bus lane from Everglade Drive to the SH1 interchange
  • New intersections at Alexia Place and Bartells Drive
  • Signalisation of the intersections at Diorella Drive, Goodwood Drive, Hilltop Road, and Murphys Road
  • Upgraded signals at the Hollyford Drive and Everglade Drive intersection
  • Roundabouts to connect parts of the new Mill Road with Redoubt Road, Ranfurly Road, and Alfriston Road
  • New bridges across Puhinui Creek and Cheesman’s Bush
  • Original Mill Road south of Redoubt Road to become a shared path and property access road only.

Stages 2 and 3

Over the next 3 years, we’ll work towards route protection for Stages 2 and 3 which will include securing the designation and consents needed for construction.

One of the first tasks we must complete is to ensure that the decisions previously made for these stages align with government expectations as outlined in GPS 2024 and the wider context of the region today. We expect to start this work in mid-2026.
