Purpose

The purpose of this project was to replace a high-risk intersection, ranked as the fourth riskiest in the country due to the high crash rate, with a new roundabout, reducing the risk of death and serious injury crashes.

Benefits

The objectives of this project were to:

  • reduce deaths and serious injuries at New Zealand’s fourth riskiest intersection
  • provide cycling and pedestrian access
  • provide reliable journey times.

Overview

The $7.3 million contract to build a roundabout at the intersection of State Highway 30 (SH30) and State Highway 5 (SH5) Hemo Road in Rotorua was awarded to Fulton Hogan.

Construction started in April 2016. The projects objectives are to:

  • increase safety at this high-risk intersection (fourth highest on the national list of high-risk intersections for safety (2013). Treatment of the worst intersections is an objective of the Safer Journeys Action Plan(external link)
  • enhance connectivity and integrate with the surrounding area and local roads 
  • provide cycle and pedestrian access across the state highway and integrate it with the national cycleway
  • create a gateway to Rotorua in partnership with Council and the local tourism businesses
  • provide enhanced stormwater treatment.
