The dual laned roundabout at the intersection of SH3 and De Havilland Drive, which includes the realignment of Airport Drive, will significantly improve safety at the intersection. It will also enhance the efficiency of SH3 by reducing traffic delays now and in the future and cater for future growth in Bell Block.
To ensure we get the biggest safety and efficiency benefits that we can, the current intersection of SH3 and Airport Drive will be turned into a cul-de-sac to ensure that all traffic to and from Airport Drive via the State Highway uses the roundabout.
Construction on the roundabout is expected to begin in late 2025 once detailed design is complete, all property is purchased, and consents secured.
New Plymouth District Council (NPDC) is planning to construct a local road roundabout on Airport Drive to connect to the Parklands Avenue extension. This will ensure safe access to the eastern end of Bell Block and the urban development area (Area Q).
More information about the local road roundabout on Airport Drive is available on the NPDC website.
