We’re making the road to Raglan safer by adding rumble strips, wide centrelines and widening shoulders. We’re also creating safe places to pass and making minor improvements to some intersections along the route
State Highway 23 between Whatawhata and Raglan suffered significant damage after the North Island’s major storm event in late January 2023, and is closed to all traffic due to an ongoing safety risk while the site is investigated and a plan made to get the road back to full use.

Too may people are dying and being seriously injured on the road to Raglan so we’re making improvements that will help prevent crashes and reduce their severity if they do happen. We’re currently working on the section of road between Waitetuna and Raglan.
Improvements on this section include:
Work on this section is expected to be complete by the end of summer 2019.
We are currently reviewing safety improvement plans for the section of highway between Hamilton and Highbrook Way.
As part of the Safe Network Programme we are identifying roads where changing speed limits could make a big difference in preventing deaths and serious injuries, and where communities are calling for change.
We are currently at the early stages of reviewing the speed limits on State Highways 23, 31 and 39 in West Waikato.
As part of this process we want to understand what is important to the community and will be asking for your input through community event days and online feedback options. Once we have dates and venues confirmed we will publish this information on our website and in the local newspapers. The purpose of public engagement is to seek insight from communities and road users on what we need to consider when looking at the safety of the road – this includes speed and what makes the road feel unsafe. The feedback gained from the engagement phase will help us determine if and what proposed speed limit changes will be formally consulted on.
