Layout changes at Landing Drive roundabout
Over the next few months, there will be a number of layout changes at Landing Drive roundabout, some of which may impact traffic flow during peak periods. These layout changes are necessary to enable the team to create safe work areas and complete the upgrade of Landing Drive roundabout to an 8 lane intersection.
When will I notice changes?
The first change will occur Saturday 3 March 2018 when we reduce the size of the roundabout. There will be no reduction in the number of lanes but some lanes may change alignment slightly to accommodate the smaller roundabout.
What do I need to do?
Please be patient, obey the lights and allow a little extra time. The temporary traffic lights will help support traffic flow and reduce the impact.
Why is the roundabout being upgraded?
The Landing Drive roundabout is almost at capacity. A roundabout works best when there is a similar flow of vehicles on each arm of the roundabout. At Landing Drive, the strong north/south flow means the roundabout is not balanced and doesn’t work as well as it could. The solution is a new 8-lane intersection with permanent traffic lights which will improve safety and journey reliability. Construction is planned to complete August 2018.

Milestones
What will the intersection look like?
When complete, the intersection will have 8-lanes for north and southbound traffic flow, with dedicated left and right turn lanes.
Landing Drive and Verissimo Drive will also have dedicated turning and straight through lanes. This will improve the flow of traffic entering and exiting the industrial areas.
Previous traffic notices
- SH20A/Kirkbride Road intersection opens and SH20A/Montgomerie Road intersection closes permanently
29 August 2017
If you are travelling to the Airport please plan ahead and allow up to 30 minutes extra as people get used to new routes and layouts.
For travellers wanting to go to Montgomerie Road, please know that the SH20A/Montgomerie Road intersection has closed permanently. Take the left lane and exit at the newly opened Kirkbride Road off-ramp before the new Kirkbride underpass and travel on local roads to Montgomerie Road.
The Transport Agency is continuing to work with its partners Auckland Transport and Auckland Airport on a range of short, medium and long term measures to improve reliability and reduce congestion in the areas immediately surrounding the airport.
Further improvements to SH20B are also being planned to improve capacity along the south eastern access to the airport.
What’s happening
The underpass opened to traffic on 29 August 2017. All right turns will be reinstated at SH20A/Kirkbride Road intersection and SH20A/Montgomerie Road intersection will close permanently.
What do I need to know?
As part of the upgrade of the SH20A/Kirkbride Road intersection, the SH20A/Montgomerie Road intersection will close permanently to improve safety of motorists. Safety concerns include:
- The distance between the SH20A/Montgomerie Road intersection and the new northbound off-ramp at the upgraded SH20A/Kirkbride Road intersection will be around 400m. 400m is not enough for drivers to safely make their necessary lane changes.
- It will be a similar situation for drivers wanting to change lanes between the SH20A/Montgomerie Road intersection and Landing Drive when it is upgraded from a roundabout to an intersection controlled by traffic lights – there will be not enough road distance to make necessary lane changes safely.
Local road upgrades
We have completed a number of upgrades on local road intersections to ensure maximum traffic flow away from the area during the afternoon peak. These include:
- Westney Road/Jordan Road/Kirkbride Road intersection – traffic lights operating and the westbound left turn into Westney Road re-opened
- Ascot Road/Kirkbride Road intersection – two lanes along and out of Ascot Road and two lanes eastbound across Kirkbride Bridge
- Richard Pearse Drive/Ascot Road intersection – two lanes out of Richard Pearse Drive
- Temporary traffic signals operating at Landing Drive roundabout.
