Further work is continuing under traffic management including temporary speed limits and there may be some stop/go in use. It is expected this should finish on 4 December. Crews have been instructed to ensure there are no lengthy delays when this is being used. We expect there will be a further closure in this area in 2025. We will keep you up to date with definite dates and times of when this will happen as soon as this information is available.

There is a large amount of work needed on this section of SH1 and not all of it was able to be done within thes three-week closure. SH1 between Ātiamuri Bridge and Wairakei roundabout was closed from 16 September until 4 October 2024, between the hours of 8am - 6pm, Monday to Saturday. The road was open overnight 6pm - 8am and on most Sundays..

Detour

The detours for light vehicles (ie all vehicles you can drive on a Class 1 licence) was via SH30, SH32 and Poihipi Road down to Wairakei Drive. This added approximately 40kms and 27 minutes extra to journeys.

For all heavy vehicles, the detour was via SH30 and SH5 which was an additional 42 minutes and 62 kms approximately.
