If you are using SH1, you need to stick to the official detours.

Long-haul trips

HPMV restrictions have been lifted on SH4 for the duration of this project. Monitoring of the road will be ongoing to ensure it is safe. Those doing long-haul trips will find this route a very good option.

SH1 Putāruru to Tokoroa

The work on this section started at 5am on Saturday 23 November and runs until Friday 20 December. SH1 will be closed from SH1/Princes Street, Putāruru to SH1/SH32 Tokoroa intersection. Work will take 4 weeks to complete.

All north and south bound SH1 vehicles will be detoured via Princes Street, Arapuni Street, Arapuni Road,  Old Taupo Road, SH32 - Tokoroa and vice versa.

There will be a temporary speed limit of 70km/h along the entirety of the detour route. To make this route suitable for local HPMV,  there are also some temporary speed limits on some of the structures including:

  • Old Taupo Road, Waipa Stream Bridge TSL 30km/h
  • Old Taupo Rd, Otaneroa Bridge, 30km/h

Heavy vehicles travelling on longer journeys are instructed to use the official SH5/30 detour.

We have received feedback of some poor driving behaviours on the above detours; pertinent to heavies is the feedback that there have been a few instances reported/witnessed of trucks taking corners too quickly, resulting in crossing the centreline while traversing the corner. This route is relatively windy and narrow in places, so please drive to the environment.
