The works are being delivered for Waka Kotahi via the Kā Huanui a Tāhuna alliance. It is an alliance partnership between Waka Kotahi and Queenstown Lakes District Council (QLDC) along with four design and construction companies, Beca, WSP, Downer New Zealand and Fulton Hogan.
Kā Huanui a Tāhuna is governed by a board made up of representatives of each of the organisations involved, along with representation from mana whenua.
The name Kā Huanui a Tāhuna was gifted to the alliance by mana whenua to encapsulate the significance of this union and the projects that will be delivered.
It can be variously translated as:
The pathways of Tāhuna
The great outcomes of Tāhuna
The many fruits of Tāhuna
Huanui is the word used by Kāi Tahu to describe pathways and roads. Tāhuna is the original name for the ancient settlement that is now overlain with the urban form of Queenstown.
The programme of work being delivered by Kā Huanui a Tāhuna includes other Crown and QLDC projects in addition to NZUP:
- Queenstown Town Centre Street Upgrades
- Queenstown Town Centre Arterial – Stage 1
- Lakeview Infrastructure
- NZ Upgrade Programme – Queenstown Package
- Wakatipu Active Travel Network
