Project introduction

Te Hana to Port Marsden Highway is section 2 of the Northland Corridor, a 100-kilometre strategic route connecting Auckland to Whangārei. This section is the longest of the corridor, a 45km stretch of 4-lane highway, which includes the Brynderwyn Hills alternative.

Road of National Significance

Te Hana to Port Marsden (including a Brynderwyn Hills alternative) is stage 2 of the Northland Corridor, 1 of the 3 Roads of National Significance (RoNS) that will improve connections from Auckland to Whangārei. The Northland Corridor will support economic growth and productivity, reduce congestion, improve safety, support housing development, and provide a more resilient roading network.

Stretching from Warkworth to Whangārei, the road will address the critical resilience and safety issues facing the current road. Northland has one of the worst safety records in the country and SH1 over the Brynderwyn Hills was closed in both directions last year for 36 days and closed southbound only for 37 days – totalling 73 days.

Property impacts and a route has not been established for the Te Hana to Port Marsden stage, although we will be taking into account work already done in the corridor over previous years.

To work quickly, we’re using all the great feedback and information we already have, and we are talking with key stakeholders. We’re looking to make decisions about the route in the first quarter of 2025.

Recovery work through the Brynderwyn Hills completed during the 2024 closure has provided us with a more reliable route for the medium term while we progress this section of the Northland Corridor.
