An interim safety intervention to start saving lives along a dangerous stretch of SH1 between Whangārei and Ruakākā.
The SH1 Whangārei to Wellsford Northern project will deliver interim safety inventions along a 12.2km stretch of SH1 from Springfield Road, Whangārei, to the Port Marsden Highway (SH15) roundabout. These improvements will help reduce the number of people killed and seriously injured on our roads.
The Northern project will be delivered in one stage, followed by a 2-year maintenance period which includes the existing flexible safety posts installed between Toetoe Road and Springfield Road.
Rumble strips
Rumble strips could be the difference between straying off the road or staying on it. The raised markings make a sound when driven over, giving people a warning if they stray across their lane.
Wider centre lines
Widening the centre line to accommodate the flexible safety posts means more space between you and oncoming vehicles. It is a simple and effective way to steer drivers away from each other. A wider centre line can give drivers more time to react and can help prevent a crash if someone makes a mistake.
Flexible safety posts
Yellow reflective posts that serve as a temporary safety intervention to discourage road users from crossing the centre line. These have been used previously on the 10km stretch of SH1 between Toetoe Road and Springfield Road.
