We want everyone who uses our roads in Northland and Auckland to get where they’re going safely. To save lives and prevent serious injuries, we have reviewed speed limits in the region.
As a road controlling authority, we have a responsibility to set safe and appropriate speed limits to maintain the state highway network. We’ve reviewed speed limits on some state highways in Northland and north Auckland as part of our national speed management programme. We are using a phased approach to implement approved speed limit changes which target short sections through townships and close to schools and marae, rather than the entire stretch of state highway.
We started with changes on SH1 Pukenui to Kaitaia which we implemented on 4 March 2024, and SH15 Kaikohe to Otaika, implemented on 13 May 2024. Changes on small sections of SH11 between Kawakawa and Paihia and SH1 between Kawakawa and Whangārei were implemented from 24 June 2024.
The next changes are on short sections of State Highway 1 between Te Hana and Whangārei, effective from 21 October 2024, and State Highway 14 between Dargaville and Whangārei and SH15 through Maungatapere township, effective from 29 October 2024.
With a new Setting of Speed Limits Rule(external link) in force from 30 October 2024, we are now considering the impacts on our implementation plans for other approved speed limit changes in Northland and north Auckland, working through the necessary processes to meet the requirements outlined in the new rule. We will update people with more details and plans in the coming months.
