Gisborne’s historic Gladstone Road Bridge is being widened to create a shared walking and cycling path on the downstream side.
The shared path being created is a project under Gisborne’s Urban Cycleways Programme, which aims to get more locals — especially children — on their bikes for everyday transport. The path will help connect Wainui and Kaiti with the CBD, providing a high standard of safety for people walking and biking.
Construction on the bridge will take place from late August 2018 through to January 2019.
Traffic management will be in place during this period. Please see the frequently asked questions section for more information.
The NZ Transport Agency and Gisborne District Council, via Tairāwhiti Roads, are delivering this project. We have also been working with Heritage NZ Pouhere Taonga, as the bridge is a Class B heritage structure.
