About the project

Every day, approximately 38,000 vehicles travel along the Baypark to Bayfair Link on State Highway 2 in Mount Maunganui. It’s a busy route with a diverse mix of users. Construction of the project is complex and is taking place within a highly constrained environment, with challenging soil conditions, on a narrow, busy arterial corridor (1.7k in length). Bay Link is one piece of a much bigger picture when it comes to transportation and movement of people and goods throughout the Bay of Plenty.

Project purpose

The Bay Link project will improve safety, access and walking and cycling connections between Baypark and Bayfair.

Benefits

Bayfair end
  • A new flyover will take State Highway 2 traffic over the Bayfair roundabout, separating state highway from local traffic.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists have safer and improved connections, with the option to travel through a new underpass under the state highway or cross at street level via a controlled signalised crossing near the Bayfair roundabout.
  • The Bayfair roundabout is being upgraded to a larger version with traffic signals to improve safety for road users.
Te Maunga end
  • A new interchange bridge will take State Highway 29A over the railway line and the State Highway 2 intersection, removing the need for motorists to cross the railway line and allowing traffic to flow more freely onto the Tauranga Eastern Link.
  • Pedestrians and cyclists will have improved connections travelling between Bayfair and Baypark.
