From Sunday 19 January work in the Port area will begin. We will be carrying out 3 improvement projects on State Highway 16 (SH16), which are expected to finish in April 2025:

  • Strand Optimisation Project – stage 1 improvements
  • The Strand rehabilitation - Completed
  • Commercial Vehicle Safety Programme - Completed

By combining these projects, we remove the need to return to the area later in the year and extend the disruption.

Because these projects involve paving and are weather dependent it is best carried out during the warmer months (January to April).

Frequently asked questions

  • What is The Strand Rehabilitation project?

Due to the heavy traffic volumes along SH16 The Strand, the road surface on the westbound lanes (away from the Ports) is slowly deteriorating. It is still safe for motorists at the moment, but we have prioritised a full rehabilitation of the road which will provide a stronger, safer road into the future.

To repair the road the team will be excavating beneath the road to approximately 500mm and replacing the concrete pads.  They will then build up the road to the required height and reinstate the pavement and line markings.
