From Sunday 19 January work in the Port area will begin. We will be carrying out 3 improvement projects on State Highway 16 (SH16), which are expected to finish in April 2025:
By combining these projects, we remove the need to return to the area later in the year and extend the disruption.
Because these projects involve paving and are weather dependent it is best carried out during the warmer months (January to April).

Noise – Residents may experience increased levels of noise and vibration at various stages through the project. We will be monitoring this closely to ensure we are working within council regulations.
Parking – Street parking will be reduced in areas where work is being carried out. No Parking signs will apply both day and night. Public parking is available on Shipwright Lane, parking lots on The Strand and surrounding streets.
Due to the heavy traffic volumes along SH16 The Strand, the road surface on the westbound lanes (away from the Ports) is slowly deteriorating. It is still safe for motorists at the moment, but we have prioritised a full rehabilitation of the road which will provide a stronger, safer road into the future.
To repair the road the team will be excavating beneath the road to approximately 500mm and replacing the concrete pads. They will then build up the road to the required height and reinstate the pavement and line markings.
CloseThe Strand Optimisation project is a joint project between NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi (NZTA) and Auckland Transport (AT). The project runs along The Strand between Alten Road and Tāmaki Drive in Auckland. The project aims to improve efficiency, travel choice and safety along this busy corridor.

CloseThe CVSP will have 12 commercial vehicle safety centres (CVSCs) across New Zealand to screen heavy vehicles for non-compliance and risk. The programme will change how we monitor and regulate heavy vehicles, going from the manual weigh pits to data-driven, targeted regulation.
