This summer NZ Transport Agency Waka Kotahi will be carrying out three essential maintenance projects on the Central Auckland motorway network. We appreciate that these works will be disruptive to motorists and the community. These dates have been chosen because traffic volumes are lower-than-normal during this period, which will help to reduce disruption. To avoid delays we highly recommend using alternative routes where possible.
From 9pm Thursday 26 December 2024 to 5am Monday 6 January 2025 NZTA will be replacing a bridge joint on the State Highway 1 (SH1) southbound lanes approximately 40 meters north of Grafton Road overpass on SH1.
Due to the location of the joint, there will be daytime lane reductions (6am to 9pm) and night-time full closures (9pm to 6am). This enables our team to work continuously to complete this work as quickly as possible.
Symonds Street southbound on-ramp and the SH16 eastbound to SH1 southbound link will be closed throughout the duration of the works. Where possible we recommend using SH16 Western Ring Route and SH20 Waterview Tunnel to avoid congestion at Spaghetti Junction.
This work is weather dependent and may need to be carried out at another suitable time.

From 2am Thursday 26 December 2024 to 5am Monday 6 January 2025 NZTA will be carrying out several maintenance activities on the Auckland Harbour Bridge, including resurfacing of lanes, and maintenance underneath the bridge. There will be lane restrictions 24/7 but traffic will still be able to travel in both directions at all times.
We use a specialist surfacing system on the steel decks of the clip-ons, which takes two to three days to cure. During this time there may be no one working on the lanes, but we will still be working underneath the bridge.
During work on southbound clip-on lanes (1 & 2) Shelly Beach Road off-ramp will be closed and Shelly Beach Road will be closed from Westhaven. Signposted detours will be in place.
During work on northbound clip-on lanes (1 & 2) Curran Street on-ramp and Stafford Road off-ramp will be closed. Signposted detours will be in place.
There will also be ongoing maintenance work over the summer period from 24 November 2024 to 27 March 2025, excluding the above period when we are carrying out other work over Christmas and New Year. These works will be carried out at nighttime. Traffic will still be able to travel in both directions at all times.
From January to March 2025, NZTA will be undertaking several maintenance and safety improvement projects in the Port area to improve efficiency and minimise future disruptions. Planning is underway and we will post updates on this page when they are available.
We will be rehabilitating the westbound lanes on SH16 The Strand between 39 and 125 The Strand. This work is in planning stage, but we are currently looking at carrying out the rehabilitation over four weekends, starting 17 January 2025.
We will be strengthening road surface in preparation for the installation of weigh plates. The installation will be completed later.
We will be carrying out activities along Stanley Street, The Strand and Gladstone Road.
Below is a summary of works we propose to carry out. Details are unconfirmed at the moment, but we hope to finalise the schedule and traffic management by end of November:
