Approved organisations and Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency regionally delivered activities are required to develop programmes of land transport activities for submission to be included in regional land transport plans, in order to obtain funding from the National Land Transport Fund.
Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency develops programmes of activities that are delivered on a national basis rather than regionally through regional land transport plans.
The Road Policing Programme is prepared by Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency and NZ Police. The Minister of Transport, in consultation with the Minister of Police, is responsible for approving the programme following its recommendation by the Waka Kotahi Board.
Regional land transport plans are six year plans that document the regions' land transport objectives, policies, and measures as well as providing a statement of transport priorities for the region. The plans incorporate programmes of regional land transport activities including those activities proposed for inclusion in the National Land Transport Programme. They are reviewed after three years.
The National Land Transport Programme (NLTP) is a key means by which Waka Kotahi NZ Transport Agency gives effect to the Government Policy Statement on Land Transport. The NLTP provides contextual information on national and regional issues, priorities and proposed activities. It prioritises the activities proposed for investment from the National Land Transport Fund and is developed every three years.
