The NZ Transport Agency is advising motorists to allow extra time for their journeys over the long weekend, with minor delays expected on SH35 between Okitu and Tolaga Bay.
Preparation works for resealing the road will take place on Friday 19th and Saturday 20th October.
Construction on State Highways is normally exempt on public holidays however, Tairāwhiti Roads General Manager Dave Hadfield said the construction crews have been given approval in this instance because of the size of the project and the scale of work ahead in the region.
“This project will see renewal treatment of some form on 25 percent of the road between Gisborne and Hicks Bay,” said Mr Hadfield. “Whether it’s a full road reconstruction or a section of resealing.
“Crews working on SH35 will soon become the norm for the remainder of the construction season,” he adds. “Motorists should allow extra time for stop/go traffic management at these sites.”
A large resealing package of works on SH2, between the Wharerata Ranges and the Waioeka Gorge, has also commenced however, these works will be suspended over Labour Day weekend.
“We ask motorists, both locals and visitors, to please respect the speed limits in place at the work sites, as well as the workers out on the roads, for their safety and for all those in vehicles passing through,” says Mr Hadfield.
The project is being delivered by Tairāwhiti Roads with funding from the 2018–2021 National Land Transport Programme.
