The topsy-turvy spring weather for road users continues with the Metservice issuing wind and rain warnings for the top of the South and lower North Islands.
The Metservice has issued a strong wind watch for Wellington, Wairarapa, and Marlborough from 11 pm tonight. Northwest winds may approach severe gales in exposed places.
It means motorcyclists and drivers of high-sided vehicles (eg trucks, campervans) will need to take extra care on exposed routes such as State Highway 2 Remutaka Hill and the Wainui Saddle on State Highway 1, Transmission Gully.
Meanwhile, a heavy rain warning for the top of the South Island has been issued for Buller and Tasman northwest of Motueka for 17 hours from one pm today (Tuesday, 24 October). Periods of heavy rain and possible thunderstorms are predicted. State Highway 60 and State Highway 6 will be affected.
Drivers must be alert for road hazards and drive to the conditions. Strong winds and heavy rain can cause slips, treefalls and localised flooding.
Road users should check weather and road conditions before they travel and allow extra time for their journeys.
